In the British Columbia community of 375.55 km2 is the largest city with respect to area. The southern border of the municipality is the United States border of Canada. This is bordered by the District of Mission to the north, Township of Langley to the west, and the city of Chilliwack to the east in Canada. This city borders the town of Sumas, Washington to the south. Most of the city has views of coast mountains and Mount Baker.

In the Abbotsford school district, there are 46 public elementary, secondary, and middle schools. There is also a virtual school which is called Abbotsford Virtual school that offers online courses to over 30 semesters. A unique modeling program and animation are offered by this school in which students learn about the video game industry. The private schools in the city include Mennonite Educational Institute, Dasmesh Punjabi School, Abbotsford Christian School, and St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School. The city also has post-secondary educational institutes including the University of Fraser Valley.  Summit Pacific College and Columbia Bible College are the religious institutes. The career colleges in the city include Sprott Shaw College, Metis skills and employment center, Career Gate Community College, and CDI College.
